Teddy bear mount project

So what have I been up to? Mainly finishing some space in my sister's house for my mom to live in. I'll take some pictures at some point and post them. But I've also been working on a couple of side projects. Below are photos of some of the most amusing of those projects.

Teddy bear head and rump mounts. These were actually a commission for a friend who wanted them as a gift for her brother. I dissected a teddy bear and cut out 3/4" plywood (overkill but better for taking on the 1/2" pneumatic staples I was using) discs shaped to fit the profile of the teddy bear. These were inserted into the open ends of the bear. Then I folded over the cloth and stapled them in place. Then it was time to make the plaques.

I folded a piece of heavy drawing paper in half and drew then cut out the approximate shape. Opened it up and took a look. Wasn't quite right so I did it again. Once I had a shape I liked I traced it out on some 3/4" oak and then cut it out carefully with a jigsaw. Clean up the edges with a sander and or rasps and then routed out using an ogee bit on my router table. Had to be quite careful about the corners as oak is prone to chipout. Then I sanded and finished them with some clear poly. Finally I set some stops on my router table did some test pieces and then cut the keyhole slot for hanging.

From there I eyeballed placement of the mounts themselves and then nailed through the back of the plaques into the plywood that I'd used as backing for the mounts. Easy peasy.

Been very busy lately. Mostly with carpentry projects. But I've made some time here and there to take and work on some photos as well. So here's a couple. First off some photos from a shoot I did with Patrick Cummings of Again Faster at Crossfit Fenway way back in February.

And my friends Ben and Kelly of Hubris stopped by a couple weekends ago to visit and play with fire.

Another chance encounter of the insectoid kind. This one didn't sit still as long as the dragonfly. But I was still able to get pretty close. Those are some long "horns" though.

How did I end up photographing this event? Let's just say I have interesting and talented friends. This was shot last month. Good times and surprisingly similar to shooting a wedding. Although with a wedding ceremony you have one major event that you NEED to get a photo of at during this ceremony you have approximately 42. In any case, on to the photos!

There is an odd mental process around these things. I often find I like the photographs I take more the second or third time I look at them, generally a week or two after I've shot them and looked at them the first time.

I won't pre-amble much here. The basic premise of the shoot is a "naughty" calendar but all things being relative "naughty" is in the context of a historical re-enactment group, so "naughty" is generally fully clothed by modern standards (I say generally with good reason although everything here should be SFW). I finally got everything together for this. Still waiting to get permission from a few of the models but here are a few of the images. Enjoy, and let me know what you think!
